To Julie

This post is dedicated to my sister, “Jules”, my first friend…my forever friend…who is daring to take the steps in her life to find happiness again...to find “herself” again…..

“A time comes in your life when you finally “get it.” When in the midst of all your fears and insanity you stop dead in your tracks, and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out: ENOUGH!

Enough crying, fighting and struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears, and through the mantle of wet lashes you begin to look at the world through new eyes. This is your awakening.

You realize that it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that you are not Cinderella and he was no Prince Charming, and that in the real world there aren’t always fairy tale endings and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you. And in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who you are or what you are…and that’s OK. And you learn the importance of loving and championing yourself. And in the process a sense of newfound confidence is born of self-approval.

You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected. You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say, and that not everyone will always be there for you, and that it’s not always about you. So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself. And in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.

You stop judging and pointing fingers…and you begin to accept people as they are and to overlook their shortcomings and human frailties. And in the process a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness.

You realize that much of the way you view yourself and the world around you is a result of all the messages and opinions that have been ingrained into your psyche. And you begin to sift through all that you’ve been fed about how you should behave, how you should look, and how much you should weigh, what you should wear and where you should shop, what you should drive and how and where you should live, what you should do for a living, and what you should expect of a marriage, the importance of having and raising children, or what you owe your parents. You learn to open up to new worlds and different points of view, and you begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for. You learn the difference between wanting and needing, and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you’ve outgrown or should never have bought into to begin with.

And in the process…you learn to go with your instincts.

You learn that it is truly in giving that we receive and that there is power and glory in creating and contributing. And you stop maneuvering through life merely as a “consumer” looking for your next fix.

You learn that principles such honesty and integrity are not the outdated ideals of a bygone era, but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon which you must build your life.

You learn that you don’t know everything, it’s not your job to save the world…and that you can’t teach a pig to sing!

You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility, and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say: NO!

You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry, and that martyrs get burned at the stake.

Then you learn about love, romantic love and familial love; how to love, how much to give in love, when to stop giving, and when to walk away.

You learn not to project your needs or your feelings onto a relationship.

You learn that you will not be more beautiful, more intelligent, more loveable or more important because of the man on your arm or the child that bears your name. You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would like them to be.

You stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes. You learn that just as people grow and change, so it is with love.

And, you learn that alone does not mean “lonely.” And you look in the mirror and stop trying to compete with the image inside your head and agonizing over how you “stack up.”

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs. You learn that feelings of entitlement are perfectly OK…and that it is your right to want things and to ask for the things that you want…and that sometimes it is necessary to make demands.

You come to the realization that you deserve to be treated with love, kindness, sensitivity and respect; and you won’t settle for less! You learn that your body really is your temple, and you begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You begin eating a balanced diet, drinking more water and taking more time to exercise.

You learn that fatigue diminishes the spirit and can create doubt and fear so you take more time to “rest.” And, just as food fuels the body, laughter fuels the soul. So you take time to laugh and play!

You learn that…for the most part…in life you get what you believe you deserve...and that much of life truly is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You learn that anything worth achieving is worth working for and that wishing for something to happen is different from working toward making it happen. More importantly, you learn that in order to achieve success you need direction, discipline and perseverance. You also learn that no one can do it all alone and that it’s OK to risk asking for help.

You learn that the only thing you must truly fear is the great robber baron of all time…”fear” itself.

You learn to step right into and through your fears because you know that whatever happens…you can handle it…and to give in to fear is to give away the right to live on your own terms! And you learn to fight for your life and not to squander it living under a cloud of impending doom.

You learn that life isn’t always fair, you don’t always get what you deserve, and that sometimes bad things happen to good people. On these occasions you learn not to personalize things.

You learn that God isn’t punishing you or failing to answer your prayers. It’s just “life” happening. And you learn to deal with evil in its most primal state…the ego. You learn those negative feelings such as anger, envy and resentment must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the universe that surrounds you.

You learn to admit when you are wrong and begin building bridges instead of walls. You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted, things that millions of people upon this earth can only dream about: a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed…a long hot shower.

Slowly…you begin to take responsibitly for yourself by yourself; and to make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never, ever, settle for less than your heart’s desire. And you hang a wind chime outside your window so you can listen to the wind. And you make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting, and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

Finally….with courage in your heart and with God by your side….you take a stand! You take a deep breath and begin to design the life that you want to live as best as you can!”

I'm a Wanted Woman!

No...I don't mean "the object of man's desire" (well maybe ONE man...God love him)...I mean "by the law!" Here's the long sad story that put me on the path to life on the lam...

The sun was out...the forecast called for a "perfect" weekend weather-wise so i decided to put on my yard sailing gear and head out for some treasure-hunting.
My first stop was at a humble abode with what looked like was going to be a wash for me in terms of real finds but....i started diggin (you never know). At the bottom of an old cardboard box...covered in old newspaper was this box. I loved its' shabby beauty and the keyhole too...so i lifted it out and opened it up....
Bingo! Oodles of vintage apothecary bottles and a few religious items. Oh my...time for my POKER FACE! So i asked the gentleman what he wanted for the box and he said: "Ten bucks." Ten bucks? "And what do you want for what's inside?", I asked. "Ten bucks for the box and its' contents " he replied. Okay..BREATHE Michelle...Breathe! Don't you dare let him see you hyperventilating! So..i casually took out a ten-spot and paid him and then casually strolled away and towards my car. When I got out of eyesight of him I was running like a mad woman and yelling at my "getaway driver" to "START THE CAR! START THE CAR!" That was a close one dear junkin friends but i got away!
My next stop was  at an old house up the street and if i didn't find a THING there ...i was going home with a smile on my face after my last score! But..Mon Amies...i was NOT disappointed! This woman used to own a "brick and mortar" shop in New Hampshire years ago. After she closed it, she boxed up all of her stuff and stored it in her barn. She decided to host a couple of yard sales each summer until she sells it all. We were not allowed to actually go into the barn...."too hazardous" she said. (She'd be right! No one would make it out alive after going in there but oh what a way to go!) Anyways..so she dragged these boxes out onto her driveway and let us all just start diggin!
Heaven i tell you..heaven! Lots of lace, books, china....

...old lace collars, vanity jars....sweet old pictures....

..an old bride's hat with attached veil....bottles....

...tins, Farmer's Almanacs, vintage spools...

...pewter salt shakers, wooden measuring tapes, drawer pulls...

...cool metal plaques..muffin pan...

..and oodles of sheet music...
...LOVE this bird one....
Sigh! What a day...what finds..what steals! How much for all of the above you want to know? Well...let's just say that when i got home i had to drastically alter my appearance because the law is after me "fa sure!"
All in all it was .....

 Happy treasure hunting mon amies!

Wonderful White Wednesday

I am so late this White Wednesday dear friends so these are just a  few "whites" that I snapped from around the house.

You're probbaly getting tired of seeing this old ironstone pitcher but my tulips have long since wilted so i replaced them with some sweet baby's breaths from the market.

..a planter on my kitchen windowsill (those speckled eggs make there way into almost EVERYTHING around here)...

...and a cannister set in my pantry...

Art Inspiration

I recently participated in my first ever "Petite Inspiration Box Swap." This one was hosted by Heather at
The Speckled Egg. I've seen lots of blog posts about these petite swaps like Heather's Valentine Edition so when I saw that this one was a
"bird-themed" swap...well...i just had to jump in and give it a try! The pressure was ON! These are some talented and creative ladies!
...these are the three boxes I received.....sigh....

The first box I received was from Lisa at Tarnished and Tattered. If the inside of this sweet box was HALF as beautiful as the outside...i was in for a real treat! And..let me tell you...i was NOT disappointed!

It was obvious that Lisa had spent a great deal of time and put a lot of thought into making this such a SPECIAL swap box for me. I was speechless to say the least!

She made these beautiful resin pieces with vintage images...sweet handmade clay buttons with hand stamped bird and nest images as well....

...lots of gorgeous lace, trims and beaded pieces...vintage buttons...
"Merci" Lisa from the bottom of my heart  for such thoughtful bits of inspiration for me!

The next box to arrive was from Melissa at Abigail's Pocatello. She decoupaged the outside of the box with a sweet bird image, a music page and created the tiniest nest with three petite eggs inside!

...it was filled with buttons, trims, flowers and glitter...

...rusty metal stars...scrabble tiles...bird paper cutouts....truffle tins...
...and 2 of the tiniest birds i've ever seen!
"Merci" Melissa for this sweet assemblage of inspiration for me!!

The next box to arrive was from our hostess, Heather at The Speckled Egg (I know...i almost died when i saw that I was in her group! This gal has been "around the block" if you know what I mean! I was nervous!)

..her box just took my breath away! a tiny nest with pearl beaded eggs....lots of ribbon..buttons...trims...

...seam binding in every color imaginable...silver foil angel wings..tiny metal bird charms...gorgeous flower appliques...

...speckled eggs (no pun intended Heather)....feathers...victorian scrap bird images...lovely tags...

"Merci" Heather for creating a petite box of art that I will cherish and that will inspire me for a long time to come!
Thank you too for making my first Petite Inspiration Box Swap such a pleasure to be part of! I look forward to many more!

P.S. If you like any of the boxes you've seen...go on over to Haiti By Hand where some of them will be listed for sale real soon! All proceeds to benefit the Haiti Relief Fund!

Wonderful White Wednesday

Another Wonderful White Wednesday with The Faded Charm. This time.... i am sharing some pictures from one of my "junking" trips and some stuff from the shop....

...i found these lovely treasures at some thrift shops on my way home from Cape Cod this past week-end. I just love the shape of the gravy server and i never can pass up ANYTHING with angels! The religious card and the cross were such finds as well! (sorry for the fake "blooms" but we're not quite "blooming" here in the Northeast yet!)
...this is a pouch/tote i've been working on for my ETSY shop. it's made out of a cutter piece from an old bedspread and embellished with one of my favorite bird images, vintage lace and button....

...more of my French Flea Market coverless book bundles....this one isn't listed in the shop yet but will be soon!

..here are two bundles that just sold in the shop. i always hate parting with some of my creations. I keep them on my mantle until they're sold and then the "space" just look so empty (until I make something new to take its' place!)

Happy White Wednesday to you all dear friends! Don't forget to click on my sidebar button and go on over to Kathleen's Faded Charm Cottage and see all the other "white wonderfuls!"
